Tips for making games with LLMs

Some tips I've been learning for making games:

  • Let it step through the game. LLMs love it if they can test the game tick-by-tick.
  • Sort out the art first. Get all the artwork and sprites configured before doing anything else. Make a scene and add everything into it, testing along the way.
  • Work out the physics. Have the LLM figure out what distances are possible to reach and save that in memory. That way it knows how to produce layouts that actually work.
  • Add debug tools for yourself. Let a human adjust things like gravity, obstacle positions and hit boxes while playing, and save to a config file automatically when anything changes. It makes manual adjustments extremely fast.
